This vibrant Jamu juice is my favorite way to brighten mornings or soothe a slow afternoon. It’s packed with fresh turmeric and ginger, offering a spicy and healing boost that feels just right when you want something natural and refreshing.

I first made this after discovering turmeric at a farmers market. The warmth and zing it brought was addictive and soon it became a weekend ritual for me and friends.

Ingredients

  • Fresh turmeric root: brings that distinct earthy warmth and bright color. Look for firm roots without wrinkles or soft spots
  • Fresh ginger root: adds its unmistakable spicy kick. Choose plump ginger that smells pungent and fresh
  • Coconut water or filtered water: hydrates while lending natural sweetness if you pick fresh coconut water
  • Fresh lemon juice: gives acidity and brightness. Use ripe lemons with juicy, thin skin for the best yield
  • Honey or maple syrup: offers natural sweetness to balance spice. Raw honey is best for flavor and health benefits
  • A pinch of black pepper: is essential to unlock turmeric’s healthful properties and deepen flavor. Keep it freshly ground if possible

Instructions

Prep The Roots:
Rinse turmeric and ginger well, keeping the peels on to preserve nutrients. Grate finely with a hand grater, chop into thin slices, or pulse in a food processor until finely chopped. If using a juicer, trim the roots into 2-inch pieces.
Blend And Simmer:
In a blender, combine the prepared turmeric and ginger with 2 cups of water. Blend on high speed until completely smooth, about one minute. Pour this mixture into a small pot.
Add Water And Simmer:
Add the remaining coconut water or filtered water to the pot. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low and let simmer gently for around 15 minutes. This cooks out the raw edge and allows flavors to meld.
Finish And Strain:
Remove from heat, stir in lemon juice, honey or maple syrup, and a pinch of black pepper thoroughly. Strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer, nut milk bag, or muslin cloth into a clean bowl or jar to remove fiber and pulp.
Serve And Enjoy:
Pour into your favorite jar or glass. This drink can be enjoyed warm, at room temperature, or chilled for a refreshing boost anytime.

My favorite part is that fresh turmeric root adds a soothing earthiness that feels grounding on cold mornings. Whenever I share Jamu juice with friends, it sparks great conversations about healing foods and recipes passed down through generations.

Storage Tips

Store leftover Jamu juice in an airtight jar in the fridge. It lasts up to 4 days but is best fresh. Gently reheat on the stove if you prefer it warm again. Avoid microwaving as this can dull the flavor.

Ingredient Swaps

If you cannot find fresh turmeric root, high quality turmeric powder can substitute but use less and expect a different texture. Maple syrup or agave can replace honey for vegan options. Fresh lime juice can stand in for lemon for a slightly different citrus note.

Serving Ideas

This juice pairs wonderfully with light breakfasts like fruit and yogurt bowls or toasted oats. It also works well as a warm sip after yoga or as a midday refresher, especially when chilled.
