French Onion Casserole (Printable Version)

# What You'll Need:

→ Main Components

01 - 225 grams penne or rotini pasta
02 - 480 millilitres beef broth
03 - 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
04 - 1 teaspoon dried thyme
05 - 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
06 - 1 teaspoon salt
07 - 2 cloves garlic, minced
08 - 450 grams ground beef
09 - 2 large onions, cut thin
10 - 2 tablespoons olive oil

→ Finishing Touches

11 - 15 grams chopped parsley or crispy fried onions
12 - 50 grams Parmesan cheese, grated
13 - 100 grams Swiss cheese, shredded

# How to Make It:

01 - Right before digging in, throw over some chopped parsley or a sprinkle of crispy fried onions.
02 - Slide the dish into the hot oven. Let it bake 20 to 25 minutes so the cheese melts and everything bubbles.
03 - Scatter plenty of grated Parmesan all across the top.
04 - Grab your cooked pasta, toss it with the beef and onion mix in a big casserole dish, and stir in the Swiss cheese so it's all mixed through.
05 - Boil pasta in salted water. Make sure you don't overcook it. Drain well and set it aside.
06 - Pour in Worcestershire along with beef broth. Mix it all up. Let things simmer for a few minutes so the flavors hang out together.
07 - Toss in minced garlic, salt, pepper, and dried thyme. Stir it around for about a minute till it smells amazing.
08 - Add the ground beef to those sweet onions. Use your spoon to break down the meat. Cook everything until no pink’s showing.
09 - Start by warming olive oil in a pan on medium. Drop in the onions and cook them, stirring now and then, until golden and soft, which takes about 20 minutes.
10 - Crank your oven up to 175°C and wait till it’s fully hot.

# Additional Tips:

01 - Got Gruyère? Use that instead of Swiss if you want a deeper taste. Toss some mushrooms with your onions for a hint of earthiness, or throw in red pepper flakes if you like things spicy. Swap for whole wheat pasta and ground turkey for a lighter take.
